Clint Eastwood might get old, but he does not lose his touch.
Hereafter is an intense and thoughtful story about a delicate subject: death. The question ‘what happens after we die?’ comes accross everyone’s mind sooner or later, and with this movie Clint Eastwood makes us ponder and think about it, but without giving any answer.
Three different stories in three different cities, three different sides of the experience of death that eventually come together after a series of events. French journalist Marie LeLay has unexplainable visions before being saved from drowning; english kid Marcus does not accept the death of his twin brother Jason, and tries to get in touch with him; american ordinary lonely man – and retired psychic – George is cursed by the gift of being able to talk to the dead, making his life miserable.
Hereafter is not as enthralling as other Clint Eastwood movies. The pace is slow, there is no real climax, but the three stories are just as reflective as they could be, trying to explore the question of the afterlife from a distant point of view, not contaminated or deviated by religion or any other belief. The characters are just people who realize they are alone on this earth, and they go on a quest to be able to draw their own conclusions about life and death. Hereafter is not dreary, bleak or desolate, it is just a very thoughtful and introspective movie, a soul-searching journey on the brink of melancholy.
Believing more in ourselves, learning from our own experiences and stop finding comfort in other people’s words or in some religions just to have something to believe in. There is more in life than this. And maybe even after.
