Here is the trailer for in our office at least with dread awaited remake of the Swedish film based on the late Stieg Larssons very poular trilogy of books The Girl with the dragon tattoo starring Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist.
I say with dread since recent US remakes of Scandinavian thrillers notably The Killing is such a poor cousin to its original.
But here there are several major differences, The Swedish films had a feeling of TV drama about them, they were released quickly on the back of the tremendous success of the books and were full of computer screen montage to symbolise the incredible hacker abilities of the heroine Salander. So there is not much competition other then with the brilliant performance by that the actors Naomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist. The casting of Rooney Mara as Salander seems first a bit of a big change for this actress with her long brown locks to transform into the androgynous tough but sensitive role of Salander so eloquently captured by Naomi Rapace.
But by the looks of the trailer the film is promising with the location being Sweden it gives a genuine feel to the movie, however too me a film shot on exotic location with all actors speaking English is a it to much reminicient of all those Hollywood films set in ancient Rome. Or as the Guardian journalist puts it in “Highlander territory”, it beeing polled the film with the worst acccents ever, and continues to say its downright weird that there are all these British and American actors apparently inhabiting Sweden. Why not just set it in the US as the earlier mentioned The Killing was relocated with story and all to a corresponding US city.
Otherwise it looks much like its a repeat of the earlier film with similar scenes. Although you can obviously see that the budget is larger and the production slicker. And its definitely worth a watch for all those Stieg Larsson die hard fans out there. Girl with a dragon tatoo is in cinemas in the UK from 26 December.
