Drm.am covered the UK the Beeba Boys premiere during the BFI London Film Festival and talked to director Deepa Mehta about the outcome of the movie. We also listened to actor Gulshan Grover who talks about the movie and Deepa Mehta.
Beeba Boys is a gangster film and a movie where stereotypes are deliberately challenged and which takes the audience right inside their Indo-Canadian world that is a specific world with a specific culture which is very unique in the crime genre in the movie world. The story of the movie is about a man named Jeet Johar who is a devoted family man and an attentive member of the Jat Sikh community. He is a gang leader who created a pack of young, brutal and loyal guys better known as the Beeba Boys. They are competing with other local Asian gangs in order to take over the Vancouver arms and drugs scene. Jeet Johar leads his boys into battle to fight for the respect that they believe they deserve. They hurt a lot of family bonds during their fight.
We talked to director Deepa Mehta about her movie. She loves the film and she says that it is something she has lived with for the last 3 years. She thinks it is fantastic to be in London to open it all over again. This is the first time she has made a film on gangsters so it was very interesting for her to work with all the additional aspects that are included in the gangster-theme.
Gulshan Grover talks about the story of the movie and his character. He says that when a sensitive director like Deepa Metha directs a film that includes a lot of violence, each gunshot would refer to someone’s feelings. To present such a violent movie in more then just a brutal way is a tremendous quality that Deepa Metha has.
