Drm.am went to the BRAND: A Second Coming premiere and talked to director Ondi Timoner about her inspiration to create this documentary and how she thinks about Russell Brand, since the documentary is about the rebellious comedian/actor/revolutionist.
BRAND: A Second Coming is a feature documentary that is produced, written and directed by award-winning film maker Ondi Timoner. The documentary is about Russell Brand who used drugs, sex and fame in an attempt to find happiness. The documentary takes the audience along his journey from drugs addict, narcissist and Hollywood star to a political disruptor and a hero to the people who are not getting enough help and medical services. Through this experience, Brand finds out that he does not want to have this fame, he wants to inspire people in such a way as his own true icons – Gandhi, Che Guevara and Jesus Christ inspired him. The documentary contains many aspects from parts of his comedy shows to personal interviews with the people who are close to him.
Ondi Timoner told us that she was send a bunch of footage and was asked if she could safe a film that Russell Brand was working on. She went to the meeting and wanted to pass on the project, because she didn’t really get it. She still went to the meeting to let them know her ideas to make the documentary better. In the meeting, Russell Brand was so charismatic and intelligent in the room and that was the first thing that got here kind of excited. Then she went to a stand-up show of him and what he told there, made her very interested and willing to work on this project.
