London Film Festival 2015

Drm.am covered the ‘The Daughter’ premiere during the BFI London Film Festival. When we were there, we talked to director Simon Stone about how he got involved in this movie and what he enjoyed most. We also talked to producers Nicole O’Donohue and Jan Chapman and got to know why they wanted to be part of this exciting production.

‘The Daughter’, based on Ibsen’s play ‘The Wild Duck’, is set in the last days of a dying logging town, where Christian returns to his family home for his father Henry’s wedding. He reconnects with his childhood friend Oliver and also Oliver’s family, which include wife Charlotte and daughter Hedvig. Then he discovers a long-buried secret. As he tries to make the things right that went wrong in the past, his actions threaten to destroy the lives of those he left behind years before.

He was asked to make the movie by the producers because they were interested in him directing the movie, since he already created the play of Ibsen’s ‘The Wild Duck’. He has been an actor and therefore acted in a lot of films which made him really want to direct one as well. This led to an opportunity for him to make his first film with material that he was already familiar with. He loved working with the actors, because he says that it is the greatest things in the world that the most talented people make the things you’ve written sound good.

Jan and Nicole say that the outcome of the movie is what they’ve hoped it would be. The have both seen Simon’s play and were very excited about it. Jan said that there were things in his own life that he could bring to the film and that’s what they really wanted to share with people. They both agreed that the actual shooting of the film is the best part for a producer. They had a great Australian crew and a really good experience.
