Showing at the London Film Festival is Ingrid Goes West directed and co written by Matt Spicer, also known for It’s Not You It’s Me (2012) and Flower (2017), he composes a great new comedy-drama film about a crazy social media stalker who moves to LA and manoeuvres herself into the life of an Instagram star. Read Marit Feddema’s review of Ingrid Goes West.
Ingrid Goes West winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance tells the story of a young mentally unstable women called Ingrid Thorburn (Aubrey Plaza). She is a crazy Instagram stalker with a history of confusing “likes” for meaningful relationships. In contrast to Taylor Sloane (Elizabeth Olsen) who is an Instagram-famous “influencer” and lives a perfectly, boho-chic lifestyle. To get close to her, Ingrid moves to Los Angeles. She buys a house near Taylor’s house and is doing all the things that Taylor does. Taylor becomes Ingrid’s latest obsession. Ingrid visits the same places, reads the same books, eats the same food and dresses the same as Taylor. To really get in touch with Taylor, Ingrid abducts Taylor’s dog as a reason to come to her house and meet. However, after a while, their relationship quickly goes from #BFF to #WTF. This movie is a satire to the modern world of social media and proves that living a perfect life is not always as good as it looks like.
Aubrey Plaza’s acting was incredible. She portrays the character of Ingrid very convincingly.
Ingrid Goes West is a movie with a lot of humour and satire but also with a not so pretty but true underlying message, if you want portray a perfectly life in order to gain lots of online admiration you sometimes do insane things, that are not always as much fun as they look. This movie shines a light at the murky side of the perfectly instagrammable social media world.
To conclude, the movie makes you think about the right use of #social media.
Ingrid Goes West is in UK cinemas from 17th of November. Or catch it at the BFI London Film Festival.
