Are documentaries about celebrities really effecting their stardom status? This one, Naked celebrity on Channel 5 on 1 and 2nd of December , covered the not-so hidden meaning of celebrities body language.
Red carpet footage was analyzed by psychologists, experts in Semiotics . But who better than a showbiz reporter can recognize those common self-promoting poses and the various different styles? This documentary pointed out how Rock celebrities are so much better in handling their public faces on TV, despite not being real actors. Analyzing the bodylanguage of Bob Geldof, Bono and Sting comparing them to political leaders
I would personally agree on this, but up to a certain extent. There is a big difference between a red carpet and a quieter one-2-one interview. The kind of tension you can sense is totally different, plus the distance from the camera lens is an important key factor, as much as surprise questions and chocked Dennis Pennis looks.
What reporters generally are looking for is a; different angle, an exclusive shot, an unseen expression, a candid smile for your camera only.
The secret smile is another TV spot, of course.
Another interesting revelation was how planned and controlling some celebs are such as “Tom Cruise Spontaniety Spot” – it showing Tom Cruise meeting a crowds of fans, posing on the red carpet with Nicole Kidman and then Katie Holmes this year….
With both Katie and Nicole, every tiny detail is planned by Cruise. As he and Nicole posed on the red carpet for the paps, his arm was round her waist. It showed in slow motion, him giving her two taps with his fingers, so she turned and they kissed, two taps on the back again and they stopped kissing, they posed again and then two taps and he and Nicole appeared to move as one into the theatre.
As the Psychologist says their supposed spontaniety was anything but!
The footage of Tom with Katie Holmes showes how Katie is not at all in on the game as Nicole was, she was looking distinctly uncomfortable as he whispers in her ear what they will be doing for the photographers, then giving her a signal he pulls her toward him, she hesitates and he says (there are subtitles at this point), “you dont have to if you dont want to….” but at the same time his hand grabs the back of her head and pulls it toward him giving her little chance to refuse the kiss.
She looks even more uncomfortable about the whole thing with a smile that never quite reaches the eyes.
Photo opportunities are a win win game for both stars and media.
