Racer and the Jailbird review by Drm.am
Michaël R. Roskam composes a great new crime, drama film called Racer and the Jailbird, also known as Le Fidèle. He is a producer and director, known for The Drop (2014), Bullhead (2011) and Carlo (2004). The film is shown during the London Film Festival. Racer and the Jailbird is a film about a tragic love story between Gigi (Matthias Schoenaerts), a high-flying gangster, and Bibi (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a young racing driver with very upper-class roots.
Racer and the Jailbird was selected as the Belgian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards. This twisty thriller-romance tells the story of Bibi (Adèle Exarchopoulos), a young racing driver and the daughter of a wealthy construction magnate and Gigi (Matthias Schoenaerts) who is an attractive playboy with, it seems, time and money to burn, but with secrets to keep. They met at a race competition of Bibi and fall in love. After a while Bibi founds out what Gigi is doing in the weekends when he is away. One of those weekends goes disastrously wrong and their relationship is being tested.
The key aspect of the film is that there is a lot of romance between Gigi and Bibi. They love each other, despite Gigi’s gangster activities and secrets, so much and you can see that in the film. They would do everything for each other. In my opinion this is a very beautiful, exhilarating and real love story with a sense of humour. I highly recommend to watch Racer and the Jailbird, even though it’s a bit long, it’s definitely worth it.
To conclude, this film tells a beautiful and special story, its exciting, contains humour and is very well acted.
Racer and the Jailbird is in UK cinemas from 4th of October and you can catch it at the BFI London Film Festival.
