There is a reason why it takes such a long time for animation studios to release a new animated film. Animation takes times, and to be frank it takes quite a lot of time! Not to mention in order to reach that beautiful final result a bunch of people have to be involved. Latvian director, writer, producer, animator and film score creator Gints Zilbalodis has spent 3 1/2 years on his animated film “Away” and the whole creative team consisted just of him! A stunning, dialogue free film follows a boy travelling across an island on a motorcycle, trying to escape a dark spirit and get back home. Along the way, he makes a series of connections with different animals and reflects on the possible ways he ended up on the island. Part dream, part reality, AWAY explores our common, universal need to find a connection.
The fact that the animated film is dialogue-free really allows the viewers to sink into the sounds and music of the film. It feels like a relaxation where you don’t have to process all the information being given to you verbally and just flow with the sound. Full of beautiful visuals and symbolism in the film invites each viewer to interpret the story through their own perfective. Making it one of those films that however many times you watch it every time you’ll end up finding something new. ‘Away’ puts emphasis on connection and how every single one of us is on a constant search to connect with the people around us. And inevitably you are stunned by the visual the film offers, ‘Away’ is truly amazing.
The creator of the film Gints Zilbalodis has been open with that developing this amazing project difficult for him. He says that ‘Away’ is ultimately a reflection of his own creative journey, which he set out on alone as a very inexperienced24-year-old. After leaving his Art- school, Gints went straight into independent animation, having several short films under his belt already. He knew nothing about making music or where to start with creating a feature film.
Winner of various festivals, ‘Away’ really puts the spotlight on the independent Animation film. After looking at the final credits where you see only one name appearing you can’t help but applaud the young filmmaker for his determination and interest. Not everyone could dive into something so big and unknown and come out with such an incredible result.
